I lost my iPod classic (6th gen, 80GB) and have a sufficient backup. Can I buy another updated ipod and put my recovery/backup on there?

For an iPod (that is not iPod touch), the "backup" is your iTunes library on your computer. You can buy another iPod or other Apple mobile device, and sync it from your iTunes library with the same content that was on your lost iPod.
If "backup" means something else, please describe on more detail.
Kenichi,
Unfortunately I don't have the songs in my library as these songs have been an accumulation from over the past 10yrs or so. With that being said, am I out of luck if the content is not in my library? By backup I mean /AppleComputer/MobileSync/Backup/**My personal device, iPod**
iPods (that are not iPod touch) do not get specifically "backed up." Since they are synced directly from an iTunes library (and do not have an independent Internet connection), the iTunes library holds the "master copy" of media. It's the iTunes library data on the computer that should be backed up (along with the rest of your user data), in case the computer or its drive fails.
Songs (and other media) purchased from the iTunes Store can be downloaded again at no cost

Other online music stores (such as Amazon) should have similar policies. You can re-import songs that came from physical music CDs. Other song files are gone, unless you have a backup of them, or they exist on another computer that you still own.
